Ammonia and Blood Sugar

چکیده
In 1919 Fosse (6) showed that urea is formed by the oxidation of solutions containing such amounts of glucose and ammonia as are present in the blood. Recently Hynd (9) found that “A 2 per cent solution of glucose containing approximately 60 mg. NH3 showed no optical change at room temperature, but after 24 hours at 50” the rotation fell from +0.87” to +0.29” . . . . Similar results were obtained when ammonia was added to an aqueous solution of glucose dissolved in an aqueous phosphate mixture of pH = 7.40.” These suggestive findings led us to study the effect of ammonia on blood sugar in vivo as well as the effect of glucose on blood urea in vitro. Hepatic Glutamate Dehydrogenase Activity and the Presence of Ammonia and Urea in the Circulatory Fluid of Channa Gachua in Water-Restricted Condition
Ammonia is the chief excretory product in fishes. However, non-availability of enough of water in the habitat, may lead to the formation of urea, in fishes. In the present study, the possible role of urea formation to avoid the toxicity of ammonia under water-restricted condition was tested in Channa gachua. Circulatory urea and ammonia were estimated in the blood of the fishes and glu...

متن کاملTargeted mutagenesis of mitochondrial carbonic anhydrases VA and VB implicates both enzymes in ammonia detoxification and glucose metabolism.
Prior studies with carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors implicated mitochondrial CA in ureagenesis and gluconeogenesis. Subsequent studies identified two mitochondrial CAs. To distinguish the contribution of each enzyme, we studied the effects of targeted disruption of the murine CA genes, called Car5A and Car5B. The Car5A mutation had several deleterious consequences. Car5A null mice were smalle...
متن کاملThe effect of feeding sugar-beet silage and non-protein-N on rumen and blood metabolites in bulls.
I . The purpose of the experiments was to determine, certain properties of the metabolism of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates in the rumen and tissues of growing bulls which were given either a diet containing sugar-beet silage, a urea-mineral preparation and hay or a control diet with maize silage, ground barley and hay. Daily rations were given in two equal portions twice daily at 0 7 m h...
متن کاملInhibition of water uptake in sugar beet roots by ammonia.
Ammonium sulfate, ammonium carbonate or ammonia gas inhibited water uptake in sugar beet roots whenever the pH was sufficiently high to cause the production of ammonia. When ammonia was removed by aeration, inhibition of the water uptake by roots was rapidly reversed. ATP at 0.2 mm appeared to either wholly or partially prevent the ammonia-induced inhibition of water uptake by roots. ATP may be...
